April 8-10 Box Office Contest Finalists

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

To quote Will Smith from 2001’s ALI, “The champ is here!”

In addition to announcing The 2022 FlickWish Champion, another champion was crowned who absolutely crushed the competition with nothing more than a pair of red sneakers and a little spring in his step.

By absolutely burying MORBIUS in the dust, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 dominated the April 8-10 box office weekend with a $72.1 million cash grab as this franchise doesn’t appear to be losing steam any time soon.

FlickWish would like to congratulate our following finalists:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2
Carey Cole Harbor City, CA SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2
Kevin Barry Ayer, MA SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2
Kyle Nolan North Chelmsford, MA SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2

March 25-27 Box Office Contest Finalists

The Lost City

Who says a fun, romantic comedy can’t go toe-to-toe against The Dark Knight and come out on top? Sandra Bullock says otherwise as she brings Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt along for the box office ride.

With a $10 million dollar margin of victory over THE BATMAN, THE LOST CITY proved, with a $30.4 million dollar haul to win the March 25-27 weekend, that there is still room at the theatrical table for comedic fare beyond wise-cracking superheroes and animated singing gorillas.

FlickWish would like to congratulate our following finalists:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA THE LOST CITY
Carey Cole Harbor City, CA THE LOST CITY
Kyle Nolan North Chelmsford, MA THE LOST CITY

March 11-13 Box Office Contest Finalists

The Batman

As a 12 year-old kid in 1989, I balanced my cinematic worship time between the churches of Steven Spielberg with INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE and Tim Burton with BATMAN. In the 90’s, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino joined the fray with GOODFELLAS and PULP FICTION. In the 21st century, I continue to be a Christopher Nolan acolyte thanks to THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy.

Thank Christ that Matt Reeves picked up right where Nolan left off with a phenomenally dark take on the caped crusader that didn’t pull a single punch by respecting the audience’s intelligence and love for The Dark Knight and his rogues gallery of villains.

Proving that his THE PLANET OF THE APES trilogy wasn’t a fluke, Reeves delivered another massive box office win with THE BATMAN dominating the March 11-13 box office weekend with $66.5 million.

FlickWish would like to congratulate our following finalists:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA THE BATMAN
Caleb McCarthy Derry, NH THE BATMAN
Kevin Barry Ayer, MA THE BATMAN
Kyle Nolan North Chelmsford, MA THE BATMAN
Megan Lawrence Vassalboro, ME THE BATMAN
Ruth Blaney Littleton, MA THE BATMAN
Ryan Smith Westford, MA THE BATMAN

February 25-27 Box Office Contest Finalists

Uncharted

You have to give Tom Holland credit. When it comes to playing the chess game that is being a movie star in Hollywood, he seems to have the vision in moving his pieces properly by scoring checkmate after checkmate. If it’s not web-slinging as Spider-Man, it’s embracing his inner Indiana Jones in a video game adaptation with a built-in audience.

With Mark Wahlberg along for the ride, UNCHARTED dug up $23 million in box office treasure to conquer the February 25-27 box office weekend.

FlickWish congratulates our following finalists who cheered for the globe-trotting adventure:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA UNCHARTED
Caleb McCarthy Derry, NH UNCHARTED
David Getsick Acton, MA UNCHARTED
Kyle Nolan North Chelmsford, MA UNCHARTED
Michelle Mainguy Leominster, MA UNCHARTED
Patrick Daly Lunenburg, MA UNCHARTED

Jackass Forever

Call the folks at FlickWish suckers for nostalgia if you must, but this weekend’s box office champ brought back the awesome memories of being a 23 year-old chucklehead who had to catch Johnny Knoxville and the gang before trying to get to work on time.

Bringing a refreshing breather from the superhero freight train that has become the backbone of the theatrical recovery, post-pandemic, JACKASS FOREVER kicked loyal fans in the balls with a $23.1 million rake to rule the February 4-6 box office weekend.

FlickWish congratulates our following finalists who embraced the Jackass vibe:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA JACKASS FOREVER
Caleb McCarthy Derry, NH JACKASS FOREVER

Boston Red Sox Partner with FlickWish

Boston Red Sox

Due to SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME squeezing out one more win to take the January 21-23 box office weekend with a $14 million dollar haul which shut out all of our contestants who unanimously picked SCREAM to win, we had no winner to announce for this edition of The FlickWish Box Office Contest.

Despite a missed win for our contestants, we officially announced our partnership with The Boston Red Sox and their contribution to our Night Out in Boston prize package for The 2022 FlickWish Champion:

January 7-9 Box Office Contest Finalists

There is one skill that Marvel Studios has yet to master at the box office and that is knowing when to take their foot off of the gas. I mean…damn! When a movie crushes, you can feel it. But this isn’t your typical weekend rumble at the cineplex. This has been a tsunami of historic box office proportions.

Once again, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME brought home $32.6 million in gold to take the January 7-9 podium and secure its place as a blockbuster to remember.

FlickWish congratulates our following finalists who didn’t go cold on the web-slinger:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
Kyle Nolan North Chelmsford, MA SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
Na Lam Lowell, MA SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

December 24-26 Box Office Contest Finalists

Spider-Man: No Way Home

As so many blockbuster franchises launch, make cinematic history, and then fall victim to Hollywood’s addiction to being rebooted and recycled with X-MEN and TERMINATOR coming to mind, Marvel Studios has revolutionized the art of cinematic housekeeping by tying up the loose ends from three mammoth SPIDER-MAN sagas and setting them up under one MCU roof with SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.

With the Marvel multiverse running wild at the box office, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME crushed the competition with a takedown of $84.5 million to win the December 24-26 weekend.

FlickWish congratulates our following finalists who know how to bet on a sure thing:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
Caleb McCarthy Derry, NH SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
Kelly Brown Bradley, ME SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

December 10-12 Box Office Contest Finalists

West Side Story

As heartbreaking as it can be to see a Hollywood icon not connect with their audience despite delivering a cinematic product that has Oscar written all over it, Steven Spielberg was able to still deliver a box office champion in WEST SIDE STORY, but at a fraction of the opening weekend score His Holiness could generate back in the day.

With every dance move it could muster, WEST SIDE STORY grinded out $10.5 million in box office to win the December 10-12 weekend.

FlickWish congratulates our following finalists who still worship at the altar of Spielberg:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA WEST SIDE STORY
Kyle Nolan North Chelmsford, MA WEST SIDE STORY
Ruth Blaney Littleton, MA WEST SIDE STORY

November 12-14 Box Office Contest Finalists

Eternals

As Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to rescue movie theaters from the COVID-19 pandemic, Marvel’s latest rookie to join the club, ETERNALS, proved that it’s a star on the rise with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao at the helm despite a lackluster debut by Marvel standards. Here’s hoping a pandemic-free sequel in the future will earn the team a spot at the grown-up table.

Nevertheless, ETERNALS grinded to a second straight box office win by locking down the November 12-14 weekend with a $26.8 million payday.

FlickWish congratulates our following finalists who believe in underdogs:

Brett Nolan Lunenburg, MA ETERNALS
Ronald Miller Rindge, NH ETERNALS
Ryan Smith Westford, MA ETERNALS
